I deliver psychodynamic or psychoanalytic psychotherapy as psychoanalysis is my approach to Psychology.
My clinical and therapeutic practice is based on the principles and theories of psychoanalysis as a form of psychotherapy that promotes deep and lasting changes.

FREQUENCY: How Often Do I Need to Attend Psychotherapy?

The psychoanalytical approach to psychology that I use is generally a more intensive and in-depth form of therapy. In other to make progress, the adult or child undergoing psychoanalytic therapy often meet with me at least once a week.

Research shows (see research below of Tiemens et al. (2019)) that the effectiveness of mental health treatment in general, especially for common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety, are associated with a high frequency of sessions during, at least, the first three months of treatment.

Despite our “quick fix” culture and today’s era of brief interventions, the effectiveness of the therapy is closely related to the commitment with attending regular sessions at the same day and time each week for a while.
I might even request to see you more often if I believe you’re in serious crisis. When you are at the “maintenance stage” then you might be able to stagger appointments out until eventually stop going to therapy.

DURATION: How Long will it Take for Psychological Treatment to Work?

The length of psychological treatment varies from one person to another. It is impossible to say how long treatment through psychoanalytic psychotherapy will take.

Because it is a therapeutic process, and the time it takes depends on the individual circumstances, it can vary from many months to few years. Research shows that the treatment length impacts on the positive outcomes and goals achieved with the therapy so it is very important that you have a sufficient number of sessions for the treatment to work.

Based on research and my clinical experience, the majority of patients report feeling better after 3 months, but a minimum period of 6 to 12 months may be necessary to important changes to happen.
